You could walk past it a hundred times and never know it was there. Down a short flight of steps on the edge of Old Eldon Square, beneath the handsome facade of a Georgian townhouse, sits one of Newcastle's most quietly brilliant pubs.
The Wobbly Duck
The Wobbly Duck is a basement micropub that opened in July 2021, tucked into the cellar of a terraced Georgian building just outside the Eldon Square shopping centre. It is the kind of place that rewards the curious, the sort who notice a small sign and decide to investigate.
Step through the door and down the stairs, and the city above disappears. The space is intimate and low-lit, with repurposed beer barrels doubling as tables, and a playful scattering of rubber ducks and plushie ducks perched on every available surface. The duck theme runs through the whole place with a charm that somehow never feels gimmicky. It feels like drinking in someone's brilliantly eccentric front room.
The bar is serious about beer. Ten craft keg lines rotate constantly, covering everything from hazy pale ales and IPAs to rich stouts and sharp sours, with five cask ale pulls sitting alongside them. The blackboard behind the bar changes so often that regulars treat each visit as a lucky dip. Independent breweries are the backbone of the selection, many of them from the North East, and the staff are genuinely knowledgeable about what is pouring. If you are not sure what to go for, ask for a taste. A well-kept stout has been singled out by reviewers as consistently top-notch. Real cider, a decent wine list, and a handful of local spirits round things out for non-beer drinkers.
There are pies and snacks available if you need something to soak up the ale, and the online shop does tasting boxes and mixed packs with local delivery to NE, SR and DH postcodes if you want to take the experience home.
Out the back, the Wobbly Garden is an enclosed paved patio with outdoor heaters, a welcome extra when the cellar bar fills up on weekend evenings. It can get busy on match days, but the atmosphere only improves for it.
The Wobbly Duck holds a 4.8-star rating on Google with over 350 reviews, which for a pub that does zero flashy marketing is a testament to word of mouth. It is run by the same people behind Beer Street in the city centre and The Old Fox in Felling, so the pedigree is solid.
You will find it at 4 Old Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7JG. Open daily from noon until 11pm. No need to book, just turn up. It is a two-minute walk from Monument Metro station just off Blackett Street near the top of Northumberland Street, so you have no excuse.
The best pubs are the ones you feel like you have discovered for yourself. This is one of those.
