You could walk past it a hundred times and never know it was there. Down a short flight of steps on the edge of Old Eldon Square, beneath the handsome facade of a Georgian townhouse, sits one of Newcastle's most quietly brilliant pubs.

The Wobbly Duck is a basement micropub that opened in July 2021, tucked into the cellar of a terraced Georgian building just outside the Eldon Square shopping centre. It is the kind of place that rewards the curious, the sort who notice a small sign and decide to investigate.
Step through the door and down the stairs, and the city above disappears. The space is intimate and low-lit, with repurposed beer barrels doubling as tables, and a playful scattering of rubber ducks and plushie ducks perched on every available surface. The duck theme runs through the whole place with a charm that somehow never feels gimmicky. It feels like drinking in someone's brilliantly eccentric front room.
The bar is serious about beer. Ten craft keg lines rotate constantly, covering everything from hazy pale ales and IPAs to rich stouts and sharp sours, with five cask ale pulls sitting alongside them. The blackboard behind the bar changes so often that regulars treat each visit as a lucky dip. Independent breweries are the backbone of the selection, many of them from the North East, and the staff are genuinely knowledgeable about what is pouring.
